Taiwan-Funded Red Sea Fusion Centre Launched in Somaliland

A Taiwan-funded Red Sea Fusion Centre was launched in Somaliland on Thursday, an initiative aimed at strengthening maritime security, information sharing and cooperation to safeguard freedom of navigation in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

The centre is expected to serve as a platform for maritime domain awareness, information and intelligence exchange and coordinated responses to security threats affecting one of the world’s most important shipping corridors.

The Red Sea and Gulf of Aden connect the Indian Ocean with the Mediterranean through the Bab al-Mandab Strait and Suez Canal, forming a vital maritime route that carries an estimated 13% of global trade.

The centre’s launch comes amid deteriorating maritime security in the region, where attacks on commercial vessels, piracy and smuggling activities involving militant groups have disrupted shipping routes and raised concerns over freedom of navigation.

Somaliland occupies a strategically important position along more than 850 km (528 miles) of coastline on the Gulf of Aden, near the southern approaches to the Red Sea and the western Indian Ocean.

Maritime security is particularly important to Somaliland because of its dependence on international trade and plans to further develop strategic infrastructure, including the Port of Berbera.

The centre could provide a focal point for cooperation between Somaliland and international partners operating across the Gulf of Aden, Bab al-Mandab and the wider Red Sea region.

Senior Somaliland officials attending the launch included Interior Minister Abdalle Mohamed Arab, Coast Guard Commander Admiral Ahmed Hurre Hariye and Foreign Ministry Director-General Mohamed Abdirahman. Taiwan’s representative to Somaliland, Allen Lou, also attended.

Taiwan said it hoped its support for the project would encourage broader international participation.

“It is anticipated that Taiwan’s full support can catalyze more international stakeholders to join, grounded on shared vision, shared interests and shared victory,” the Taiwan Representative Office in Hargeisa said in a statement.

Further details about the centre’s operational structure and long-term activities have not yet been announced.

The initiative also marks another step in expanding ties between Taiwan and Somaliland, which have developed closer political and economic relations since establishing reciprocal representative offices in 2020.
