Amid rising tension over key chokepoints,Somaliland steps up as maritime security anchor

Hargeisa,Haatufonline,April 14,2026

As global powers scramble to secure critical shipping routes amid rising tensions in key chokepoints, Somaliland is quietly ,but decisively, positioning itself as a dependable maritime security partner in one of the world’s most strategic corridors.

At a recent maritime security coordination meeting in Hargeisa, Somaliland reaffirmed its commitment to working with regional and international partners to safeguard maritime security and ensure freedom of navigation. The message comes at a time when the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden are once again at the center of global geopolitical risk calculations.

Unlike many actors in the region, Somaliland is not reacting to instability. It has been containing it for years. With over 850 kilometers of coastline along the southern gateway to the Red Sea, Somaliland has built a track record in combating piracy, terrorism, and transnational smuggling networks, all while maintaining a level of coastal security that remains rare in the wider Horn of Africa.

Officials highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen coordination among national maritime institutions, improve information-sharing, and respond proactively to emerging threats. But beyond the technical language of coordination and frameworks lies a clearer strategic signal: Somaliland is open for serious security partnerships.

As international naval powers search for reliable footholds in a region increasingly threatened by disruption, Somaliland stands out,not as a liability, but as an asset.A reliable partner. A strategic location. A stabilizing force. The question is no longer whether Somaliland matters in the regional security equation, but how long it will take others to fully recognize it.
